About This Quote

In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, jigs were dances performed by groups of musicians and dancers. The music was simple and repetitious, and it was danced to keep time with footwork. The first suit of the dance was fast, like a jig. The second suit was slow and proud as an old-fashioned promenade.

The third suit was a kind of quickstep, sometimes called a cinque-pace, which came into its own in the sixteenth century. It is easy to see what this quote refers to: the first suit, the fast music; the second suit, the stately and dignified music; and finally, the "cinque-pace," which was very fast and led to a stumble or fall.
